Syllabus Review

The course syllabus often serves as the first point of contact between the instructor and students. It provides students a general outline of the course of study, as well as an introduction to the instructor and his or her method of teaching. It typically communicates course objectives, policies, and a schedule for assignments, projects, and exams. A well-crafted syllabus not only communicates what students should expect to know and be able to do upon completion of the course, but also conveys a sense that both instructor and students are responsible for achieving the goals of the course. A good syllabus can be used as a guide—or road map—for successful completion of those goals.

The structure, language, and tone of the syllabus create a first impression of the course. ITLE instructional designers are available to help you create a learner-centered syllabus that communicates course expectations in a positive manner.
